Toroidal Field Generation Battery

Capacitor battery for toroidal field generation includes 120 oil capacitors of type 2/450 (450 mikro Farrad / 2 kV). The resulting capacity is thus 0.054 F. To get the appropriate value of toroidal field the voltage of on battery 2 kV is required. Accumulated energy in that case reaches value about 0.1 MJ given by equation $E = 0.5 CV^2$. Battery itself is charged by 6-phase rectifier, dimented to 20 A /10 kV. While charging, one pole of capacitor battery is being grounded. Batteries are charged through resistances. There are serial-integrated 8 resistances altogether, giving the total resistance of 500 ohm. In $T = 0$ s they are short-circuited and batteries are then exponentially charged. As soon as the battery is charged to required voltage, it automatically isolates itself from the circuit by protective vacuum switches. After that, it can be to be connected to thyristor.

Capacitors are divided into 12 sections. Each section is connected to thyristor of its own. The thyristors are connected on one single coaxial cable, which leads into tokamak and is divided among 28 toroidal field coils. Thyristors are also integrated into a rellay frame, which contains short-circuiter. In case of some problems short-circuiter prevents capacitors to be discharged into tokamak. If short-circuiter should fail, on the rellay frame there is also integrated unplugger.

Although there were 12 thyristors integrated, to reduce the strain put on material while discharging the capaciteors into the circuit, after the rellay frames were disassembled on FNSPE it was shown, that there were not needed such a many thyristors to be integrated. The reason was, that only the first two thyristors on each frame have been damaged by strain, while the others were untouched. It was concluded that the charge was flowing only through the first two thyristors. Because of this, in the new design of rellay frames, there will not be as many thyristors as before.

Current situation of the system

To the main section of this article

Back to the documentation

Galleries
